Dealing with Mesothelioma Disease

19 October 2008

Introduction mesothelioma is almost always fatal; most patients affected die within a year of diagnosis. The majority of cases are pleural in origin, although peritoneal tumours are equally common in some groups of workers exposed to amosite (brown) asbestos. The risk is negligible up to 10 years after first asbestos exposure and very low up to 15 years, but increases thereafter as the third or higher power of time since first exposure n 1

The association of mesothelioma with asbestos was first noted in 1960 n 2, and since 1968, the UK Health and Safety Executive has maintained a register of deaths in England, Wales, and Scotland for which mesothelioma is mentioned on the death certificate in three Annual deaths increased from 154 in 1968 to 1009 in 1991, and increases have also occurred in other countries in four.

The increase in rates in individuals above the age of 60 is the expected continuation of trends observed over the past 20 years, reflecting asbestos exposure when those now aged over 60 began their working lives in the early 1950s and earlier. However, there is a continuing increase in the death rate among men now aged under 50, most of whom began work in the mid 1960s or later. The increase suggests that asbestos exposure was greater around 1970 than in any previous period, and that mesothelioma rates will continue to increase as this generation ages.

Anticonvulsants And Peripheral Neuropathy

09 December 2007

Some anticonvulsion drugs like Valporic acid have been found to be very effective in relieving neuropathic pain. Sold under the brand name Depakote, it is commonly prescribed in peripheral neuropathy as a pain killer. The starting dose of Depakote should not be more than 500mg, administered twice a day. This drug is not available without a medical prescription and one needs to be aware of its adverse side effects. But exercise caution: due diligence in a medical professional’s consultancy is no doubt of prime importance with respect to these drugs.

Symptoms of Nerve Damage

26 November 2007

I was under the car, trying to change the oil the first time I noticed the electrical shocks going up my right leg. They were going up the lateral (outter) part of the leg, starting on the bottom of my foot and going up to about mid calf. The sensation was that of sudden burning, stinging pain that lasted about three seconds. It was so sudden that it made my right leg jump and it hit the side of the car which hurt even more. It went away after a little while and I finished the job. Afterwards I got on the computer and tried to figure out what was going on. I searched ” symptoms of nerve damage” in one of the search engines and was taken to a site that described the symptoms of nerve damage and I read an article about those symptoms and how those are usually the first signs of peripheral neuropathy. I’ve had diabetes for about a year and that is one of the cardinal effects of the disease. Let me tell you. It hits you like a tone of bricks the first time. I’m glad I found out something about it or I would have never figured out what was going on. The way I figure it, I could find out what I could about it or remain ignorant and go on suffering. I found out what was going on!

Our digestive systems are not designed to process the types of food the we now eat everyday. Fast food and quick meals is partly to blame along with a lack of nutrion and the addition of chemicals found in most food we eat.

Obesity Poses Colon Cancer Risk

20 November 2007

You know there are lots of medical dangers associated with obesity. But did you know that obesity heighten risk of colon cancer and colon cancer surgery in women? Well, this is now an established fact based on a study that was recently presented by Dr. Joseph C Anderson at the American College of Gastroenterology in Philadelphia.

In fact, the recent study indicates obesity to be included as part of the list of traditional risk factors for contracting colon cancer that leads to colon cancer surgery.

As we all know, obesity is sometimes overlooked by physicians themselves so the need of the hour is to counsel patients who are obese. It is now the physician’s duty to counsel obese patients that they are at risk.
