Piracy’s Effects on IT Security Software
22 February 2008
Software piracy has greatly affected the distribution of IT security software all over the world. While the pirates can offer great products at extremely low prices to the public, the software developers get nothing in return- which can be quite disconcerting to them, given that good software often costs millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to develop. Many developers these days have devised methods to curb piracy. For instance, programs will now often need a confirmation code if one desires threat definition updates. Thus if someone who is not using genuine software tries to get an update, either his or her program will lose functionality or updates will simply not be allowed.
